(On reading) Quiet Power by Susan Cain

Growing Up As An Introvert

If you’ve read the book, Quiet by Susan Cain, this is the same material but adapted for children, teens, parents, and teachers. If you haven’t, it’s about introversion.

Why are you being so quiet? Why don’t you speak up more? Why are you so slow?

If you are an introverted adult, it’s highly likely that you’ve heard these questions asked of you. If you’re raising introverted kids, they’re experiencing these questions asked for the first time. You take it in good faith that people are just curious. But to the developing brain these could be interpreted as “is something wrong with me?”

The main message of this book is nothing’s wrong with you. You just have a different way of managing stimulation, which is what introversion and extraversion is about.

The author, an introvert herself, calls introversion a hidden superpower. You have the ability to focus more deeply on topics and activities. You have the ability to listen more intently with empathy and patience. These are abilities that make great leaders and achieve goals.

While it doesn’t help that even at school the model of excellence being pushed is to be loud and bold, that to be quiet is to be submissive, that it’s a weakness. This is the reality. You’re going to have to figure out ways to navigate this reality.

The author mixes stories of students and her own personal stories to discuss introversion and the ways that it is misunderstood. The book presents things you can do while in different places i.e., at school, while socializing, doing hobbies, and at home. Some strategies include:

finding your interests
find your crew
get people’s ideas
empower others
let go of toxic friends
meet new people and other extroverts too
express yourself, share
forget overthinking, lower inputs and practice
take adventures
find a cause, stretch when you can
plan ahead for places to recharge
