A Classic Reference On Writing

“There is little or no detectable bullshit in that book.” Stephen King once wrote, “I’ll tell you right now that every aspiring writer should read The Elements of Style.”

You don’t have to be an aspiring writer to learn how to write well. Beyond the obvious benefit, learning how to write can open up ways to know yourself. The authors, William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White wrote “All writing is communication. Creative writing is communication through revelation – it is the Self escaping into the open.” It also teaches you focus: “The act of composition, or creation, disciplines the mind.”

This book is only eighty-five pages. Pretty short compared to today’s books. Short but compact. The book is split into five parts. There are parts that seem outdated, but it’s easy to give it a pass since it was first published in 1920. The first part is about basic rules of grammar. The second is about composition and guidelines. The third is about forms, and things to consider. The fourth is about words and expressions that are often misused, and the correct ways to use them. The last is about style and finding your own voice.

Some rules written by the authors. Simple enough to remember. Easy enough to implement.

Keep things simple.
Be direct and specific.
Use the Active voice.
Remove needless words.
