How To Optimize Your Thought Process: Lessons From Sherlock Holmes
It’s like a superpower. The first moment when Sherlock Holmes is introduced to John Watson, Watson is perplexed at how this person could know so many things just from their first meeting. Only after Holmes explains how he arrived at his conclusions that it seems reasonable.
A standard Sherlock Holmes story features a set of incidents that the two characters set out to uncover. Between the brewing of a mystery and Watson retelling the adventure, the two go about their ways. Watson is usually slower. Holmes is the hero figure who by the end almost always has it figured out. They are fictional, but their ways of thinking are real.
The author of this book references the adventures of Holmes and Watson, and the ways in which they differ in their thought processes. The book expands on the parallels of modern neuroscience, psychology, and Sherlock Holmes’ methods. One example is the scientific method, in which Holmes applies the same approach to cases. The author also talks about the “Brain Attic”, the space in which we store memories and information, and the ways in which this space can be properly utilized and accessed. The latter part of the book is about the appropriate use of imagination and creativity, and of logic and deductions.
One big lesson here is the difference between mindlessness and mindfulness. Mindlessness is going through the motions, not being present, and not fully experiencing what’s happening. Mindfulness is being observant of the world, and of yourself. One reason Sherlock Holmes is so good at what he does is because he is observant of the environment, and of his own thinking.

Why read Mastermind?
You learn how to be more observant. You learn to take active participation in your experiences, which in turn makes you more productive, more focused, more attentive. Also, there are a lot of interesting takes and trivia on Sherlock Holmes.
How can you use this information?
To paraphrase the great detective, you need to both see and observe.
