The Rise of Art, Emotions and Interactions: A Prediction About Work In The Future
This was first published in 2005. It made a claim that right-brainers will rule the future. What’s a right-brainer? And what does ruling the future even mean?
In this book, the author cites a concept from neuroscience. The brain has two hemispheres. The left handles logic, sequence, and analysis. The right handles emotions, context, and big picture thinking.
The author predicts that people who can master Right-Directed thinking will rule the future, and Left-Directed thinking will either be replaced, outsourced, or overshadowed because of three reasons: (1) In a marketplace of abundance, it’s harder to stand out. (2) Work that is routinary will be outsourced. (3) Work that can be codified will be automated.
The kind of work that will remain is what he calls “High Concept” and “High Touch”. High Concept is the ability to create art, appeal to emotions, detect patterns, and craft narratives. High Touch is the ability to empathize, to understand human interactions. The book then expands on six aptitudes that are key to mastering Right-Directed Thinking.
- Design is the combination of utility and significance.
- Story is context enriched with emotions.
- Symphony is seeing the bigger picture and making connections.
- Empathy is sensing another person’s emotions.
- Play is that sense of humor, playfulness, and joy.
- Meaning is the sense of having contributed to something bigger than your own.
At present time, you can probably make an argument for either outcome of the author’s prediction. Is technology out? Is Elon Musk as Right-brainer or a Left-Brainer? As a concept, the left-brain, right-brain distinction seems vague and abstract. Like it has too much baggage. It feels like a supporting argument for something bigger.

Why read A Whole New Mind?
It makes the case for the significance of things like art, emotions, and meaning in business, careers and in workplace settings
