Logic: A Framework For Figuring Things Out And Exploring Arguments

Why do you need a framework for thinking?

One, because you don’t have it all figured out. Two, you want to be able to test your assumptions. Three, you want to be able to know when you’re wrong.

Everyone has opinions. If you spend enough time in a social network, online or physical, these opinions will bump into each other, and you will see people arguing. How do you then sift through arguments to find what is useful? Or in this matter, truthful? In this book, the author notes that logic helps clarify these arguments. By design, logic illuminates ambiguity, and it lets you find the possible sources of disagreements.

This book is split in three parts. The first is about what logic is, how you can use it to verify truth, and how to build arguments. The second part is about the limits of logic, where it is no longer helpful, and how it can’t convince as good as emotions. The third part is about what to do with logic, and where logic can be used.

The author made a comparison in this book: Logic is to Mathematical Truth as the Scientific Method is to Scientific Truth. And so, this is also a book on How To Think Like A Mathematician. That comparison is also called an analogy, which is one concept that is prominent in logic. Other concepts covered in this book are about abstraction, directionality, relationships, categories, paradoxes, axioms, equivalence and more.

There is a social and political bent to some examples in the book, which I’m guessing some people will disagree with.

Why read The Art Of Logic?

You get an introduction to logic. You learn where logic can be used and where logic falls short.

How can you use this information?

Use logic to verify truth in statements. And then engage emotions to communicate it. Not the other way around.
