How To Question Numbers, Interpret Data, And Make Better Judgments Through Statistics

Can you tell if a stat is legit? On the other side, do you give numbers that are truthful?

In this book, the author talks about why Statistics is important, how it brings clarity and insights to problems, and on how it is also susceptible to be used and abused to push an agenda.

The author talks about why Data Literacy is a key skill in the future. One, because you have to be able to understand and critique conclusions drawn by others. Otherwise, you’ll get swept by every other exaggerated claim or some carefully framed survey result. On the other hand, if you handle and interpret data for a living, your job is to get to the truth as close as possible, and to communicate data in an open and non-manipulative way. You don’t influence your audience’s emotions, attitudes or convince them of a perspective, you just tell it how it is.

This being a book on Statistics, it has the theoretical concepts one would find in a Stat class: Samples and Populations, Correlation and Causation, Regression, Variables, Algorithms, Uncertainty, and Probability. This also discusses poor statistical practices; an example is fudging the numbers to fit a narrative. Another discussion is about how we can do better e.g. (I) improve the way results are communicated, (II) keep the data open, accessible, and intelligible, and (III) audiences need to call out poor practice by asking about the trustworthiness of numbers, sources, and interpretation.

Why read The Art Of Statistics?

You learn how to make better judgments. You learn how numbers are derived, and you learn how to question it.

How can you use this information?

Be open and curious about the world, and of people’s interpretations. See if you arrive at the same conclusion.
