The First Filipino Crime Novel
What needs solving, needs a mystery. In a poor neighborhood, young boys have been turning up dead every first Saturday of the month for multiple months. The timing and their causes of death show a pattern. The protagonists take on the cases and realize that they are dealing with a web of corruption in the government, the incompetence within the NBI, and the Church and the Elite harboring its misdeeds.
When a crime novel needs solving, you usually have a Sherlock Holmes-type of character. In this story, the detectives are two Jesuit priests who also perform forensic work. How does two priests also do investigative work? It is interesting and it makes sense how it is explained in the story.
Scattered throughout the book, the author introduces the perspective of the antagonist at irregular intervals. As a literary device, it is quite disorienting at first. But as you progress in the story, you realize who this person’s perspective is. At one point you feel pity, then shame, then fear, or all at the same time.

If you are looking for a gripping read, this makes the cut. Give this a read. This also has a film adaptation that can be watched in Netflix.
