This is an introduction of Bruce Wayne and of James Gordon to a corrupt Gotham city. With no knowledge of each other and having to prove their own to the city, they eventually find themselves aligning in principle. Batman cleans up the streets at night, hunting mobs, corrupt policemen and politicians. James Gordon serves as a trustworthy foundation within the police force.
Having never read this, I was surprised at how close Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is to this comic. It captures the heroic beginnings of Batman’s morality. Frank Miller’s commentary at the end says it all that ‘the Batman isn’t out for revenge; he wants the world to be a better place; he’s a hero who wishes that he didn’t have to exist.’
